During this year’s National AccessAbility Week, I attended an online session titled “Emerging from the Shadows”, hosted by the NorthStar Special Needs Society (NSNS). This event brought together educators, advocates, parents, and professionals to highlight the importance of understanding and supporting neurodiverse individuals in our communities.
One of the most memorable sessions was led by Dr. Foo, who shared valuable insights into the experiences of neurodivergent children. Her talk emphasized that many challenges these children face stem not from their conditions, but from environments that fail to accommodate and include them. She encouraged families, educators, and peers to shift their perspectives—focusing on strengths, practicing patience, and creating space for every child to thrive.
What stood out most to me was the emphasis on listening—not just to professionals, but to the children themselves. Each neurodiverse child has their own way of experiencing the world, and it’s only by truly listening and observing that we can begin to support them effectively.
I left the session feeling more hopeful—and more determined. It reminded me why inclusive volunteering and education are at the heart of Acrozzi’s mission. Building a supportive community begins with understanding, and this webinar was an important step forward.
